Logo Triops Did you know...?

Triops is a crustacean that inhabits temporary ponds. Also known as the tadpole shrimp, this animal is perfectly adapted to the variations in humidity found at the bottom of such ponds. In the dry season, its eggs remain buried underground, and can survive for decades. Triops feeds on plankton, algae, larvae, worms and even weak members of its own species.

There are at least nine different species of Triops distributed around the world. The oldest is Triops cancriformis, which is found in temporary ponds in Minorca and holds the record as the oldest living animal on Earth, as its external appearance has not changed since it appeared in the Triassic Period, some 220 million years ago.

That is why we have chosen Triops as the symbol of the LIFE Basses Project.
