Temporary ponds forever!

LIFE Basses Temporary ponds are classified as priority habitats by the “Habitats Directive”. In the Mediterranean basin, their scarcity, fragility, singularity and exclusivity makes them richly deserving of such classification, for temporary pools are, without doubt, one of the most important habits in the Mediterranean region due to the enormous biodiversity they contain.

In view of this, the Island Council of Minorca has developed the LIFE-Nature Project “Conservation and management of temporary ponds on the island of Minorca”, known as LIFE Basses, which was launched in November 2005 and finished in September 2009. This is the official website of this project, where you will find all the relevant information regarding the project, as well as all the documentation of both an educational and technical nature that has been drafted throughout the project.
